The County Council’s inclusion in its Draft Rail Strategy of a proposal to convert the Abbey Line into a Bus Rapid Transit system, or ‘busway’, was condemned at recent meetings of the Abbey Flyer Users Group (ABFLY) and the Community Rail Partnership.
Park Street Parish Councillor Nicholas Tyndale commented:
“Instead of an environmentally destructive ‘busway’, people deserve the restoration of the Abbey Line’s passing loop at Bricket Wood. This would improve the service frequency, making it easier for people to choose rail travel over road journeys. We should be investing in – rather than discarding – rail services, particularly now that Watford Junction has been reconfigured to allow Abbey Line trains direct access through to London Euston.”
Consultation on the Draft Rail Strategy ends on 4 August 2015 and people are encouraged to comment at www.hertsdirect.org/railconsultation.
ABFLY are campaigning against the busway option and have produced a template letter which may be used as the basis of the response or sent direct to the County Council which can be downloaded at www.abfly.org.uk/no2bus/.
