Cllr. Dorothy Kerry – Chair, St Stephen Parish Council has issued the following statement regarding the Parish Precept.
St Stephen Parish Council represents and serves the villages of Bricket Wood, Chiswell Green and Park Street, which is around 6,000 households.
98% of the Council Tax that you pay goes to Herts County Council, St Albans District Council and the Herts Police and Crime Commissioner. Only 2% goes to the Parish which means on average we pay £6.12 per household per month. This year’s increase amounts to 0.3% of our total Council Tax bill and whilst a significant percentage, in fact it represents an average of only 94p per month. So in 2020/21 we will be paying approx £7.06 per month for the Parish Council to manage and maintain 5 buildings, 7 parks/open spaces, 2 woodlands, 9 sports pitches and 6 playgrounds for all of us, as well as undertaking tasks such as litter picking and dog waste removal. The increase is needed both to maintain these assets for us all and to hold reserves for times such as these.
These facilities and services, support our community’s health and well-being; in normal times our meeting spaces enable clubs and societies to meet regularly for social, sports and educational purposes. The Parish also make grants and donations to a variety of local organisations, as well as organising a significant number of community events.
